Granted, I can see that make sense though fans got upset. The first mistake in that sub was localizing Kamen Rider Gridon into Kamen Rider Ornac. Since the usual fansubber decided against subbing Gaim (biiiig mistake), other fans picked up the slack. IIRC the whole localization process behind Detective Conan/Case Closed was largely dictated by TMS in Japan, who wanted Funimation to change the names to appeal more to Western audiences, specifically younger audiences.Īs bad as dub name changes can be, it's way worse when the fans do it. I think One Piece has similar issues reaching the Western anime fan base - anime is seen here as this kind of cool, exotic and niche thing, so for a series that's as unapologetic and earnestly goofy as OP that draws plenty of inspiration from stuff like Looney Tunes, I'm not too surprised it got a chillier reaction than something like Naruto, FMA or Bleach. It probably would have needed a raunchier, Shin-chan-esque dub that made it explicitly for adults to have a chance, but I'm guessing that was never in the cards (and it'd clash hard with the show anyway). On the flip side, the tone of the show can be childish enough (especially with the Junior Detective stuff) that it didn't really work on Adult Swim, either.
